What are Options?

Options can be used to protect a portfolio, generate income or to speculate on the value of an asset. An option is a contract which gives the holder the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell an underlying asset at a specific price within a specific period of time.

The two most common types are Call and Put options:

  • A Call option gives the holder the right, but not the obligation, to buy the underlying security at a specified strike price on or before a specified date.

  • In a similar fashion, a Put option gives the holder the right, but the obligation, to sell the underlying security at a specified strike price on or before a specified date.

Why trade options

  • Generate income from your stock holdings

  • Protect your portfolio with put options

  • Accurately control your risk when buying options

  • Lower your initial investment compared to equities
